Skin diseases make up about 20% of all cases seen in small animal practice. Many conditions are not curable and due to this fact owners often get frustrated with the perceived lack of progress despite the best possible treatment offered by their attending veterinary surgeon. A definitive diagnosis is required for specific treatment and also to be able to give a precise prognosis, which can in some cases avoid owner disappointment and the potential to lose a client. This paper aims to explain when biopsies are indicated, how best to perform the actual procedure and how to get the best results from your histopathologist.
